New & Surprising Hearing Data from Ecuador & Peru

Hearing in toads is more complicated than you might imagine.

How well a toad hears depends on whether the toad has a middle and outer ear (unsurprising), whether that middle and outer ear is fully ossified (surprising!), and on at least one mystery mechanism that allows some earless toads to hear without an ear! More on that mystery mechanism soon.

One earless species (Rhinella yunga) has hearing that begs the question - "Do you really need an ear to hear?"
